Why I love therapy

For some of us, counselling therapy brings a treasure trove of endless possibilities, or ways to change our ability to function properly after suffering a big life event, such as bereavement, an unexpected illness, work situation or a family dynamic. Therapy can help you get to know yourself better, clarify issues that matter to you and develop your potential. It gives you the opportunity to work in ways which promote your ability to resolve problems, or to develop coping skills for things which cannot be changed.

I believe that attending counselling can increase our ability to make good choices for ourselves, and change our future.

What I offer

As part of my practice, I integrate three main theoretical theories into my counselling: CBT, Person Centred and Psychodynamic, with an emphasis on person-centred approach, which means you lead in exploring your thoughts and feelings whilst I support you emotionally and psychologically, within a safe, confidential environment. With your permission, I might help and support you in a CBT way, in identifying unhelpful thought patterns, for example, making realistic goals and plans to change them. This might involve some home-work in between sessions.

Ethics

My primary commitment is to look after your wellbeing and safety. Therefore, I welcome you into an honest and safe, confidential space in which you can feel nurtured, listened to, without fear of judgment or rejection, a space in which you are free to discover ways to respond to the difficulties in your life. It is my aim that you can find peace and hope within this safe space, that brings joy to you and possibly others.

Holiday, and endings/ planned and unplanned

There will be times when I am on holiday or you might go on holiday. I will always tell you in advance.
As the client, you have the right to leave therapy whenever you choose and you can discuss with me when you feel ready to end the therapy. You can also let me know if you are considering entering another therapeutic relationship. You can decide in advance how we are to finish the therapy, with a good ending, which could include a review of what you have gained and maybe a coffee.(!)

Additional needs

If you are suffering from a medical condition, addictions, self -harm, or other, we shall put into our contract some plans and expectations to keep you safe.

Writing reports for professionals

If you need a referral letter to be written for another agency who is helping you, I will first ask for your written consent. I shall also charge a small fee.

  • · If I believe you or another person is at risk of being harmed e.g. if I are concerned that you are in serious danger of attempting or completing suicide, in imminent danger or temporarily unable to take responsibility for your actions, I would advise the relevant emergency authorities and/or your doctor and/or your nominated emergency contact. Any decision to break confidentiality would not be taken lightly. I will usually consult with a colleague, the clinical supervisor and where possible, advise you as well. You have an ethical and legal right to know the importance of and/or see what is being said about you if you wish and I will make every effort to include you in the process except in circumstances where it would harm you or others to inform you (e.g. child protection situations, mental incapacity, terrorism).
